Downtown concentrates Monument Circle, the convention center, stadiums, White River State Park, and several Cultural Trail districts. The Motor Speedway lies west, the Children's Museum north, Newfields northwest, Fountain Square south, and many north-side hotels near I-465. Trips that combine several of those outlying districts generally require driving or rideshare.
IND sits southwest of downtown beyond I-465, not in the central city. Rental cars, taxis, rideshare, and IndyGo use designated airport areas; confirm the live pickup instructions before leaving baggage claim. A normal drive downtown is straightforward, but construction, conventions, games, and Speedway traffic can change the final approach.
I-65 carries the principal north–south approach and I-70 the east–west approach, with both feeding the downtown interstate system. The useful exit depends on whether the destination is the convention center, Monument Circle, Mass Ave, White River State Park, or Fountain Square. Follow current navigation and TrafficWise rather than memorizing an interchange that may be under construction.
I-69 reaches Indianapolis from the northeast and, through the completed southwest corridor, from the Bloomington direction; I-74 serves approaches from Cincinnati and Champaign. Both ultimately hand the trip to I-465 or central interstates. A north-side or Speedway hotel may be easier from the beltway than from a downtown-first route.
Amtrak's Cardinal links New York and Chicago through Indianapolis three days each week. The station is part of the downtown intermodal complex near South Illinois Street, convenient to the convention and stadium district but not a full-service, frequent rail gateway. Confirm the operating day, live train status, station access, baggage rules, and late-night hotel transfer directly with Amtrak.
IND to downtown
A taxi, rideshare, rental car, or prearranged shuttle gives the most direct airport transfer. IndyGo Route 8 connects the airport and downtown as a local, non-express bus with intermediate stops, so compare its live schedule with flight time, luggage, weather, and the final walk from the downtown stop.
The planned Blue Line is a future project with service targeted for 2028; it is not a current airport option. Do not build an arrival around future rapid-transit maps. Use IndyGo's current trip planner and airport ground-transportation instructions on the travel day.

Without a car
Stay near Monument Circle, the convention center, or Mass Ave and use the Cultural Trail for connected central districts. Arrange dedicated rides for the Speedway, Children's Museum, Newfields, airport, and any late return from Fountain Square that the group should not make on foot.
With a rental car
A car saves the most time for the Speedway, north-side museums, Newfields, and suburban stops. On a downtown day, leave it in the hotel garage or one public garage instead of repeating short moves around stadium, convention, Circle, and White River destinations.
During major events
The Indianapolis 500, Brickyard weekend, major conventions, games, concerts, and tournaments can shift hotel pressure, garage access, transit demand, street controls, and departure times. Check both the citywide calendar and the venue's current arrival instructions.
After arrival
